JAMAICA'S BAUXITE & ALUMINA INDUSTRY
At the end of the 1970s, Guinea in West Africa, which had the world's highest grade bauxite, also drew ahead of Jamaica, and is now producing about 18 million tonnes of bauxite a year. Jamaica's share of world bauxite output has therefore fallen from 18.1% in the 1970s to 8.1% of the 180 million tonnes of bauxite produced worldwide in 2005.
Problems with the Bauxite-Alumina Industry in Jamaica
Bauxite or 'red dirt', the raw material used in the production of aluminium, has been extracted in Jamaica by open-cast mining since 1952. In the 1960s Jamaica was the leading producer in the world and the industry expanded over the years to include four large refineries which process most of the raw bauxite into alumina before it is exported.

The Jamaican Government expects the value of mining exports from bauxite and alumina to improve to US$507 million ($77 billion), seven per cent higher than last year, with the pending reopening of the Jamalco plant but there's still …
Anthony Greenaway | Environmental impact of bauxite
Bauxite was discovered in Jamaica in the 1940s while processing to alumina began in the early 1950s. Based on currently known bauxite deposits, the Mines and Geology Division predicts that Jamaica's bauxite-alumina industry could last for another 50-100 years.

THE ALUMINIUM STORY BAUXITE TO ALUMINA: THE …
The ultimate product of calcination is the most stable phase of alumina, corundum or -alumina. This is, however, not desirable for smelting, because -alumina is slow to dissolve in the bath (refer to Section 24). For the formation of Smelting Grade Alumina (SGA), calcination is carried out at around 950°C.

Bauxite in Jamaica
Bauxite is the ore from which aluminium is made. Jamaica contains some of the largest known deposits of bauxite in the world. The mining areas are located in the western and central parts of the island. After mining, most of the bauxite is carried to alumina plants where it is refined into alumina. The alumina (or in some cases unrefined ...

Chemistry of the Acid Neutralization Capacity of Bauxite …
Abstract Bauxite residue (red mud—RM), a byproduct of the Bayer process for refining bauxite to alumina, is highly alkaline (pH ∼ 13) and its treatment and storage poses unique waste management challenges. In this work, the acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) of Jamaican RM from a storage facility in Sherwin, Texas, was measured, and …
Impact of Jamaican Bauxite Mineralogy on Plant Operations
Over the period 2003 to 2006 the bauxite feed to the Kirkvine refinery has undergone a dramatic change in composition with severe impact on plant performance. Surprisingly, the change in composition is not directly evident from the XRF analysis of the major elements, which showed that the total Al2O3, Fe2O3 and LOI contents of the bauxite remained …
Bauxite: The principal ore of aluminum.
Bauxite is the principal ore of aluminum. The first step in producing aluminum is to crush the bauxite and purify it using the Bayer Process. In the Bayer Process, the bauxite is washed in a hot solution of sodium …
